Arts Council of Surrey

Membership in the Arts Council of Surrey is open to individual and associate members, and organizations. The Arts Council of Surrey acts as an umbrella organization for over 150 individual members and more than 40 member groups representing the performing, literary, visual and media arts.

Of Lions and Lambs

March is known as a windy month, starting stormily and becoming quieter as days pass. But the old saying of March coming in like a lion and going out like a lamb may need to be adjusted when talking about Surrey’s arts and culture scene. The lion that was roaring last month has carried on its artistic energy and there is no sign of it changing into a meek little sheep!

The City of Surrey, along with numerous community partners, did a spectacular job of creating an active Celebration Site at Holland Park. During the time it was open, the venue featured many professional performers and visual artists. Congratulations to all the hard-working City of Surrey staff and volunteers that made such an immense community celebration a reality. Our own made-in-Surrey 2010 Celebration Dance Team kept the energy going with daily shows. The Arts Council is proud to have played a part in assembling that dance troupe. We send kudos to Kelly Konno, Dawn Govier and the young dancers for their energy and creativity that made the team a success.

And yes, there is life in our busy city after the Winter Olympics, especially in the arts!

There was lots of wind in the sails of the Surrey Art Gallery recently, moving it forward in new and exciting directions. The current Glocal multi-media installation was launched, with light images projected onto the outside walls of the new Chuck Bailey Recreation Centre. I attended an opening event at the venue and was very impressed. There will soon be a call to artists for proposals to keep the artwork projections ongoing.

We feature some other public art this month, works that add to the special and unique look of Surrey. Colourful banners found at Central City Mall and our newest rec centre are definitely worth visiting. We have many such pieces to enjoy all over town.

Enjoyment can also be had at the whimsical and educational Mozart event to be held at the Sheraton Vancouver Guildford on March 12. This musical adventure will feature the Surrey Symphony in partnership with the hotel and the City of Surrey. It involves examining clues, dining on delicious offerings from Fresh Restaurant and our local River's Bend Winery and hearing the magical music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart himself. Read more in this issue about the lively event planned.

Artists have long been involved with expressing social issues and raising awareness of injustice. The White Rock Social Justice Film Festival Society presents its thought-provoking lineup of movie screenings this month. Take some time to visit one of these excellent examples of fine filmmaking.

The brisk breezes of creativity will keep us all refreshed and excited this month. Fly your artistic kites high in the sky and get involved with what Surrey has to offer!

Financial Assistance
Grants (Group members – not for profit), may make application to the Arts Council of Surrey. Application are available through the Arts Council of Surrey office or may be downloaded (check grants for links) Application is due beginning of September each year.

Resource Centre
We currently have information of value to individuals involved in the arts, professional and non-professional performers, with regard to government agencies, foundations or businesses that provide financial assistance and publiCity including media contacts.

Office Services
The Arts Council of Surrey has available a number of office services for its members. Services are provided on an “at cost” basis as available. This includes photocopying, computer assistance and use of fax machine. For more information about these services, please contact the ACS administrator

Other Services
As an umbrella organization for many groups, we look forward to initiating new services to benefit the growth of the arts in Surrey. If a group has any requirements, which are not presently met by the Council, we would be happy to discuss them

Co-sponsorship on Projects
The ACS has been privileged to co-sponsor special events and projects with member groups. These kinds of projects resulted in successful events with the City of Surrey, Surrey Art Gallery, Central City Shopping Centre, Surrey Board of Trade, Local MLA’s and local businesses within the community. The ACS welcomes the opportunity to discuss new project with members at any time.

B.C. Association of Senior Performers
The association offers senior citizens a chance to be involved in the performing arts. It offers training and the opportunity to perform in front of live audiences.
