TIME TO SAY GOODBYE
It's time to say goodbye to 2011. But before we do, let's remember some of the good things that came out of the past year.
2011 brought the Newton Cultural Centre and Arts Council of Surrey leaps in progress. The Black Box Theatre has seen vast improvements. Curtains are installed, a stage is now available, and we have lighting and sound equipment. We even have a sound booth. All of this thanks to the wonderful Ellie and Geoff King, Surrey Firefighters Charitable Association, Fraser Downs Racetrack and Casino Found Money Program, and the City of Surrey donating time, effort and money.
Before we sing Auld Lang Sine let's sing Congratulations to three of the Arts Council's Board Directors and members for being awarded Civic Treasures for 2011. Ed Milany, who we've always know is a treasure, is a long-time board director and major contributor to the arts with his time, money and talent. Bonnie Burnside is also a long-lasting arts council board director who gives generously of her time while still doing whatever she can to promote Surrey and Surrey's events. Lucille Lewis stayed with the arts council even while she actively promoted the work of the Surrey Symphony Society and other boards and organizations. Congratulations!
For the City of Surrey a good thing that comes to mind is new City Centre Library. The building opened in late September 2011 and it has been busy ever since. The 77,000 square feet library is on 4 floors and has a cafeteria, an extensive children's area and a world languages area. As well it is equipped with meeting spaces for a variety of community needs, a 12 seat computer learning centre, wireless internet access and computers for public use, a teen lounge and gaming room, and lots of quiet and silent study spaces.
Also in the City Centre Library two new Public art works: a painting by Gordon Smith entitled, "West Coast Landscapes"; and "Marks" by Liz Magor, which are a series of sculptures.
Now say Hello to 2012. Every year sees new and fresh ideas. The Arts Council will start the new year with plans for developing visual art programs, such as painting watercolours, acrylics, marketing your work, even how to hang it effectively. We plan to continue to develop the dancing programs with flamenco, tango and square-dancing. Our plans include advancing the writing program and a new and improved writing contest.
We even have plans for a new juried art competition called "Just Birds". Look in the magazine for lots of information about it. The City of Surrey has beautification plans in the works: Beautiful City Award, City Banner Program, Cabinet Wrap Initiative, Community Beautification Grants, and Neighbourhood Beautification.
Art is all set to play a visible role in Surrey in 2012.
Carol Girardi, President

Christmas Treasures Craft Fair - an annual successful partnership between Fraser Downs Casino and Racetrack and ACS.
Surrey Secondary Art Exhibit - each year over 100 Surrey Secondary students display their 2-D and 3-D artworks at Guildford Town Centre. Started by the Surrey Art Teacher's Association, this yearly event has been a valuable way for students to learn about the world of curating an art show and exhibiting works to the public. The partnership of Guildford Town Centre, Surrey School District #36 and ACS has worked very well together to present this event.
Cloverdale Blueberry Festival - a summer towncentre-wide event, the Cloverdale Business Improvement Association connects with ACS to put on a day-long performance stage, art exhibit and craft fair in the Surrey Museum plaza. This partnership has been successful each year in helping Surrey artists and performers earn income and present their work to large and enthusiastic audiences.
