A New Year brings new opportunity
Another year has passed and it’s time to ring in an exciting new one. 2010! Although Y2K is a distant memory, it also doesn’t really seem THAT long ago. Yet ten years of incredible growth in Surrey has happened since then. Much of it has been in arts and culture and things will heat up even more in the next ten years.
Construction has been speeding up each day on our soon-to-be new home. The renovated fire hall in Newton is sure to become a city hot spot as we host art exhibits and theatre events. The call for public art has gone out and we all look forward to what creativity will be expressed on the exterior of our new cultural centre.
A New Year brings new things, such as the exciting projection wall art on the newly constructed Chuck Bailey Recreation Centre. Surrey Art Gallery, in partnership with City of Surrey’s Public Art Program, will premiere Glocal as an Urban Screen projection project to brighten up dark winter nights. Another relatively new art form in Surrey is the Argentine tango and new ACS member Bobbi Lucic shows students how to look hot making these cool moves.
There will be lots of moves, both hot and cool, at Surrey Shines 2010. This year, YACOS has organized this great event for January 30 at the Surrey Arts Centre. Support local youth by coming out and enjoying the show.
Something else new is our Literary Arts pages editor, Ursula Maxwell-Lewis. Ursula will be taking over from Lois Peterson, who has done a wonderful job for us. Many thanks, Lois, for your sharp editor’s eye and your interesting submissions and we wish you great success with the new Surrey Writers’ School. Welcome, Ursula, to our 2010 Spotlight team!
Speaking of things literary, Surrey is building a new library in North Surrey. I attended a recent open house and saw all the plans for this ambitious project. It will be another jewel in Surrey’s crown and it will increase literary activity - always a good thing!
A new year can also revive old things, such as the ancient art of glass blowing. This issue of Spotlight features a hot-shop studio that will be opened soon by skilled artist Robert Parkes. He heats up sand and makes beautiful things happen!
When attending the 2010 Mayor’s Task Force meetings I hear exciting plans for Surrey’s live site in Holland Park during the Olympics. As the show tune says, “It’ll be a hot time in the old town tonight.” This “hot time” will start with the Torch Ceremony when the flame arrives on February 8. And there will be many more fun-filled nights with non-stop entertainment on two large stages, with big screens for watching competitions, tons of family-oriented activities and daily shows of the RCMP Musical Ride.
The Arts Council of Surrey has also been instrumental in helping form a new 2010 Celebration Dance Team, made up of highly talented Surrey-area youth. Choreographer Kelly Konno has created dynamic dances that will be performed every day during the Olympics and the young dancers will also “animate” the site, interacting with the expected thousands of people.
We send congratulations to Marc Pelech, ACS Board member and Sullivan Heights Secondary art teacher, and to the very talented students who created lovely Olympics banners that now hang in the Central City mall atrium. They capture the motion of Olympic event sports scenes in graceful images and glorious colour. Well done!
As you make your new year’s resolutions, we hope you will include a commitment to attend shows and exhibits and to support arts and culture every way you can. It will warm your hearts this chilly winter. Happy 2010!
Carol Girardi, President

Christmas Treasures Craft Fair - an annual successful partnership between Fraser Downs Casino and Racetrack and ACS.
Surrey Secondary Art Exhibit - each year over 100 Surrey Secondary students display their 2-D and 3-D artworks at Guildford Town Centre. Started by the Surrey Art Teacher's Association, this yearly event has been a valuable way for students to learn about the world of curating an art show and exhibiting works to the public. The partnership of Guildford Town Centre, Surrey School District #36 and ACS has worked very well together to present this event.
Cloverdale Blueberry Festival - a summer towncentre-wide event, the Cloverdale Business Improvement Association connects with ACS to put on a day-long performance stage, art exhibit and craft fair in the Surrey Museum plaza. This partnership has been successful each year in helping Surrey artists and performers earn income and present their work to large and enthusiastic audiences.
